Pet play, also known as animal play, is a form of role play in which one or more participants act as animals, mythical creatures, or pets and may include a handler. Pet play can be considered a sub-culture of BDSM [1] and is considered unique in its many forms.

Interactions

The interactions within pet play can be either sexual or non-sexual. There are several dynamics that can be present, but there is no necessity for pet play participants to have an intimate relationship dynamic with one another. A human animal can be Dominant, submissive, switch or even neutral in play. Some pets may form packs, litters, herds, or similar groups based on their species, while others may be members of groups with their owners, such as show groups.

Pet play may exist in brief passing moments, or it can exist as a 24/7 lifestyle.

For some, pet play is an escape. For others, it is degradation and humiliation. How it fits a person depends on they want and need from the experience. Its flexibility is a major part of its appeal.

Pet Play may involve:

  • Movement restriction and bondage implements (mitts to reduce articulation, collar and leash, harnesses, etc.)
  • verbal communication restriction, perhaps to safewords and animal sounds such as “woof!” or “mew!”.
  • Training exercises such as tricks such as fetch for puppies, walking on leads and leashes , or for ponies even pulling a cart/plow.
  • Eating and drinking out of bowls placed on the floor without the use of hands and/or silverware.
  • Learning to use a litter box instead of a toilet, or even relieving outside.
  • Playing with toys, such as batting toys for kitties or tug-of-war toys for puppies.
  • Begging in the manner of the manner animal identified with, such as a puppy whining.
  • Not being allowed on furniture without permission.
  • Caging.
  • Stroking similar to that which may be appropriate to the pet type in question.

Be especially aware that those that may be in varied positions not typical of human interaction (pony stepping routines or on all fours) may be at increased risk of trips, falls, dehydration, and joint damage. Falls can be especially dangerous is wearing various pet play gear.

Gear

For many pet players, finding and buying gear is an exciting part of their play. Although there is a world of gear available through pet stores and specialty stores like equestrian shops and BDSM fetish suppliers, one does not need any gear to be able to engage in pet play, though many report that having some gear can greatly enhance the activities. Consider visiting the Ensemble Play area of our store for many pet play items.

Food and Treats

The food sold for pets in grocery stores, such as canned cat food, is made for animals, not pet play animals. These foods are designed for animals that have highly different nutritional needs than humans engaging in pet play. It is possible to create foods that look like foods made for pets and have themed treats that are perfect for pet play. There are vegetarian and vegan options for those who are creative. In some cases, such as feeding a pet play pony a carrot, no food modification is needed at all.
